Citrus Memorial Hospital opened in 1957 as a 25-bed facility. During the past 50 years, the Hospital has grown into a 198-bed facility through various expansions and additions, including:
- In 1969, the hospital grew to 55 beds with financing from revenue bonds and a Hill-Burton Grant.
- In 1973, the Hospital constructed a new four-story tower, which increased its capacity to 101 beds. Another 30 beds were added in 1976, raising our capacity to 131 beds.
- In 1981, a four-acre contiguous site was acquired and the Hospital expanded an additional 34,153 square feet, enlarging its emergency room, diagnostic imaging, lab and surgical facilities.
- In 1986, the Hospital's capacity increased to 171 beds by completing shelled-in areas of the four-story tower.
- In 1987, the Hospital completed a Family Care Center and Medical Office Building at Allen Ridge in Lecanto.
- In 1992, the old Citrus High School was renovated for use as administrative and educational offices.
- In 1994, the Hospital completed additional renovations and expansions to increase the number of critical care beds, add three operating rooms, support space and a new same-day-surgery unit with 25 beds. Also expanded and renovated were the emergency department, laboratory, radiology, outpatient registration, circulation and mechanical space.
- In 1999, the Hospital constructed a three-story, 56,000-square-foot medical office building with areas for diagnostic imaging, laboratory, office space, physicians' work space and information systems.
- In 2002, the Hospital acquired 5.4 acres contiguous with the Hospital from the First Baptist Church.
- In January 2004, the Hospital opened its world-class Heart Center.
